Listen to Barbara’s Yoga Interview on WZEN

Filed under: Uncategorized — bb @ 11:19 pm

When I was teaching at the Zen Mountain Monastery in Mt. Tremper this past June I was interviewed by Zuisei, one of the monastics there for the monastery’s on-line / internet only radio station WZEN.

The interview is up NOW and ON AIR! It is broadcast over the internet every day at 11 am and 11 pm Eastern time. It is on for one hour for the entire month of August.

Go to http://www.wzen.org/program.html for the current program listing.
or go to http://www.wzen.org/instructions.html for instructions on how to listen.

You access the program using iTunes or Live365. The instructions are there on the site if you have never done this kind of thing before. It is very simple to do. It helps if you have hi-speed internet.

Zuisei asks me many questions in the interview about: Iyengar Yoga, the nature of yoga classes these days, what it’s like to study in Pune with the Iyengars, teacher/student relationships in the Iyengar tradition, how I got to India in the first place, how to keep students interested in the practice, etc. It’s a fun casual conversation with lots of yoga teaching fitted in. ENJOY!

Please email me your comments after you’ve listened to it. I am really excited to use modern technology like this as a tool for teaching. If there is a positive response to the interview I will continue in this vein: possibly with podcasts from my own website. Let me know if you are interested!

Communication about the depths of yoga is one of the things I am most passionate about. Let’s keep the conversation going.

“According to ancient texts, Yoga is a sacred subject, to be kept secret. Hence it became mystical. I try my best to show that it is practical and I give the secrets to you. The secrets, when experienced, will make you sacred in practice.”

Clorinda's House

“Antique and Serene”
One of Woodstock’s oldest houses, this 4-bedroom, 3 1/2 bath colonial is, with its pathways through terraced gardens, a stroll down Time’s lane. Ducks and birds of all feather frolic in the big pond fronting this gracious property which has many allures: a park-like lawn, its own orchard, bluestone walls, patios and truly lovely landscaping. The capacious house, beautifully nooked and crannied, has 3 fireplaces, wide plank flooring, a beamed ceiling in the living room, original hardware and numerous built-ins. HOT ??? Yoga? Cooling Yoga!

Filed under: Asana, Classes, Schedule, Uncategorized — bb @ 11:13 am

Hi All,

it’s Wednesday and it’s hot. Don’t let this be an excuse for not attending class tonight. The air conditioner and fans are on… as long as the power lasts. It’s a comfortable temperature in the studio. Instead of STANDING POSES (traditional Week One work*) we will work more quietly tonight doing asanas to cool us and some restorative work. I look forward to seeing you in class.

*In the Iyengar Yoga System, the month moves progressively, with a focus on a specific category of poses each week. This is loosely based on women’s moon menstrual cycles. The first week of the month (which I work by the calendar “grid,” starting on Sundays, not the actual dates) reflects the week after menstruation has stopped; that week we work on Standing Poses to regain strength and energy. The second week is forward extensions. The third week, when energy and hormones are high, is spent on backward extensions: to release energy and to prepare the body for the fourth week. The fourth week, when one would be having their period, we work more restoratively: rest the body and focus on pranayama. Now, the calendar month does not always reflect our individual cycles, but this is a good framework to follow for your own home practice. Men… it gives YOU a balanced practice too! And of course, all classes, even if they are focused on one particular asana group are balanced and well rounded in their own right. A class is never entirely one set of poses, but includes some standing poses, inversions, and the appropriate counterposes.
