Oooooh… SCAREY, 3 Hour Hip Opening Workshop!

Filed under: Classes, Schedule, Yoga — bb @ 12:11 am

It’s that time again, for the annual “Halloween Hip Opening Workshop.”

Friday, October 27th, 10:30-1:30
Mt. View Studio, Woodstock

3 Hours? Really? Can I do it? Will I be able to walk afterwards? Of course! With a long warm up, Iyengar sequencing and alignment, the three hours will fly by. All levels and styles of yogis are welcome: practicing Iyengar students or not. My only request is that you do NOT have a serious knee injury or problem, as it will effect your hip work. We will do Surya Namaskar, Standing Poses and seated asanas on the floor.

This is a perfect chance to warm up for some serious ‘Trick or Treating’ or dancing over the weekend.

Costumes or Masks are optional. But there will be a prize for best costume.
Those coming in costume will get $2 off the price of admission.

Cost of workshop: $35 without costume, $33 with costume

For those with class cards, here’s the math:

2 hour class card = 2 spots (2 x $17 = $34) ($1 back if in costume)
1 1/2 hour class cards = 2 spots (2 x $14 + $6 cash = $34) (+ $5 if in costume)

No need to sign up in advance, Mt. View Studio holds LOTS of people.
Come and have a great scary time!

NOTE: This Workshop will take the place of the regular
Friday Morning Level II Class.

Prashant does Patanjali

Filed under: Classes, India, Uncategorized, Yoga — bb @ 11:26 pm

Click on the Patanjali Invocation at right under Sanskrit Mantra to hear Prashant Iyengar chant it. It’s a very clear recording straight from Pune. Enjoy. Memorize. We will start chanting it soon in the General Level Classes. What he chants before it is an invocation to Ganesh. The words are under Vakratunda Mahakaya under Sanskrit Mantra.

Namarupa

Filed under: India, Uncategorized, Yoga — bb @ 12:50 am

Namarupa

The new issue of NAMARUPA is here. It’s a heavy read, but well worth the effort. In it you will find a great article by Dr. Robert Svoboda “Fate or Free Will” and the ramifications of Karma and Intention in yoga practice; “The Yoga of Krishnamacharya” by my friend and great yogi Eddie Stern of NYC. Sri Krishnamacharya is the “grandfather” of all the primary yoga styles practiced today; and an enlightening article about the mythical intoxicant Soma. $10 buys it all and will keep you busy for a while. I have copies for sale at every class.

His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama

Filed under: Uncategorized — bb @ 11:36 am

HHDL and Thurmans

The visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Woodstock was an inspiration to us all. If you haven’t seen any picutures yet, go to Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD Monastery) website for some fantastic pictures by Robert Brennan. Martin’s pictures will come later, when I finish processing them.
Special thanks to Woodstock Iyengar Yogis: Basia Majewska, Byron Coulter, and Naomi Schmidz for all their work at KTD getting this amazing event to happen. His Holiness said he’d come back for more teachings once the construction was finished up at KTD!
And also special thanks to Lynn Schauwecker and Prof. Bob & Nena Thurman of Tibet House for inviting me to teach at the Longevity & Optimal Health Conference at Menla. If you are interested in some of the findings from the conference, essays and abstracts are posted at Columbia’s website and scroll down very far to the “Panel” section find them. The conference was fascinating and an honor to teach at. Imagine: one of the world’s leading heart surgeons chanting along to Krishna Das!

Wednesday Classes: New Times and Place

Filed under: Classes, Schedule, Uncategorized — bb @ 1:44 am

STARTING TODAY, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4

Level I 4-5:30
Level II-III 6:30-8:30 (new time)

BOTH CLASSES ARE NOW AT MT. VIEW STUDIO, WOODSTOCK

This is it, Wednesdays are now “out of the house.” As much as we all love my house, it will be a nice change not to have to worry about parking, car pooling, snow on the driveway, slanty floors, calling first, etc. I will work to keep the “bhavana” high at Mt. View Studio, so we all have a good time and inspiring classes.

Some words on the levels:

Wednesday’s Level I is good for students who: 1) are in decent shape but have never done yoga; 2) have been practicing yoga, but are new to Iyengar Yoga; 3) it is a good review for returning students who want to work slower. There is no sirsasana (headstand) but poses working up to it will be introduced. If you have injuries or are really out of shape, come to Monday’s Level I instead, we work much slower there.

Wednesday’s Level II-III is the strongest and most advanced class I offer. You MUST be able to do sirsasana for 5 minutes, urdhva dhanurasana, know the sanskrit, or know how to figure things out if you don’t. Do not come to this class if you have injuries or need special attention. The plan this fall is to take this class into more advanced asanas according to the Iyengar System. If you are a yoga teacher, or an advanced practitioner in another yoga system you may attend with my permission. Give me a call and we can decide if it is appropriate for you.

Mt. View Studio is located just off Rock City Road in the center of Woodstock. From the Village Green, go up the road toward Overlook Mountain. You will pass the Municipal Parking Lot on your Left, and the Colony Cafe on your Right. When you get to the Cemetery, make the VERY NEXT LEFT (just before the Log Buildings under construction). That is Mountain View Avenue. There is a sign there for Mt. View Studio. Follow it along until you reach Mt. View Studio on your RIGHT. Park in the lot. Come 10-15 minutes before class so we can start on time.
