Post Thanksgiving Digestion Class

Filed under: Asana, Classes, Schedule, Yoga — bb @ 12:33 am

Friday, November 24
10:30-12:30
Mt. View Studio, Woodstock

Open to all levels, and students of all styles of yoga. But please, no absolute beginners or major injuries for this class. It will be moving too fast for your safety.

The Apana Vayu Prana is the main downward digestion energy of the body. Although most yoga classes and postures are done to stimulate the upward flow of Prana to lead towards Enlightenment, unless the downward Apana Vayu is moving correctly, congestion, blockages, sluggishness, constipation, and dullness will result.

It’s not: “You are what you eat.” It’s: “You are what you don’t poop out!”

After a feasting holiday, it is good to work on asanas to stimulate this downward flow. This will be a STRONG yoga class. Besides stimulating the Apana Vayu Prana, we will work to stimulate the Agni Gastric Fire. Please let me know before class if you are having your period. Some abdominal asanas are not appropriate during menstruation. Alternate postures will be offered for you, so don’t let that be an excuse not to come.

We will work on the following:

  • kriyas to stimulate digestion and elimination
  • asanas to stimulate digestion and elimination
  • jumpings in the various asanas and vinyasana
  • inversions
  • twists, compressions, and stretches to the abdomen
  • a long expansive restorative pose to relax the abdomen and belly at the end

Regular 2 hour students can use their class card to pay the discounted $17 price. If you have an 1 1/2 hour card add $3. New students pay $20. No need to register in advance. Just show up by 10:15 to sign in.

Filed under: Classes, Schedule, Yoga — bb @ 12:18 am

THIS CLASS  AS OF SUNDAY 11/19 IS SOLD OUT.
CONTACT ME TO BE PUT ON THE WAITING LIST.
I WILL OFFER THE CLASS AGAIN IN JANUARY.

Pranayama and Restorative Yoga
Monday Nights 6-7:30
4 Week Series
November 27 – December 18, 2006
$75

Pranayama is the art of Yogic breathing. As the fourth limb of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, pranayama prepares us for the inward journey towards Samadhi (enlightenment). It consists of the regulation and refinement of inhalation, exhalation and retention of the breath.

In the Iyengar System, Pranayama is where the everything happens: when one can hold the supine restorative postures steady (without falling asleep!) and subtle careful breathing is initiated, the deep healing contact with the prana (the life force energies) can be supported and manipulated.

This course, offered over a series of 4 weeks will be progressive in the teaching.
No drop-in students will be allowed.
There are no make-up dates if you miss a class.
Snow day cancellations will be made up as necessary.

Over the period of the course you will:

  • build confidence and stability in the restorative poses
  • learn the asanas that prepare the body for pranayama
  • learn the correct use of the props involved in restorative poses
  • learn how to prop ‘properly’ for your body
  • learn the fundamentals of Iyengar Pranayama in the supine poses
  • seated and digital pranayama may be introduced depending on the level of the students attending the course

You can attend this course ONLY if you have at least 6 months regular study of any form of yoga. Absolute beginners have to wait until stabiltiy in the practice of asana is developed. Please come to regular asana class to prepare for this amazing work!

Suggested text book:
Light on Pranayama by B.K.S. Iyengar (available for purchase at first class).

And if you haven’t checked it out yet, there is also:
