Iyengar Yoga Promotes Well-Being in Cancer Survivors

Filed under: Yoga — bb @ 5:20 am

A new study of breast cancer survivors practicing Iyengar yoga… has found that breast cancer survivors who practice yoga have changes in the way their immune cells respond to activation signals, which may be important for understanding how physical activity and meditative practices benefit the immune system. The function of genes in immune cells can be regulated by proteins called transcription factors. Transcription factor nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) is linked to immune cell activation and to the stress response.

The study, entitled Down-regulated lymphocyte NF-κB activation in breast cancer survivors following yoga participation, was conducted by Pamela E. Schultz, Mel Haberman, Ph.D., Kenn Daratha, Ph.D., Sally E. Blank, Ph.D., from Washington State University, and Joni Nichols, M.D., from Cancer Care Northwest (US Oncology), in Spokane, WA. They will discuss their findings at the 120th annual meeting of the American Physiological Society (APS; www.The-APS.org), being held as part of the Experimental Biology (EB ‘07) meeting. More than 12,000 scientists and researchers are attending the conference, being held April 28-May 2, 2007 at the Washington, DC Convention Center.

Full story about the study.

Active practice of Iyengar yoga differs from the gentle restorative practices typically offered to cancer survivors as it can include all the components of physical fitness. The active practice of âsanas (postures) can incorporate cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and balance.

Yoga shows promise…

in improving symptons associated with depression, anxiety and epilepsy.

Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine and McLean Hospital have found that practicing yoga may elevbate brain gamma-Amniobutyric (GABA) levels, the brain’s primary inhibitatory neurotransmitter.

The findings, which appear in the May issue of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, suggest the practice of yoga be explored as a possible treatment for depression and anxiety disorders associated with low GABA levels.

But we yogis always knew that it worked! It will take these kind of medical studies to *validate* our experiences to the science community. Thank goodness they are happening. Here’s a picture of that happy substance:
GABA

gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the product of a biochemical decarboxylation reaction of glutamic acid by the vitamin pyridoxal. GABA serves as a inhibitory neurotransmitter to block the transmission of an impulse from one cell to another in the central nervous system. Medically, GABA has been used to treat both epilepsy and hypertension where it is thought to induce tranquility in individuals who have a high activity of manic behavior and acute agitation.

Why I love India…

Filed under: India, Misc. Musings — bb @ 10:39 pm

Residents of the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay) are wondering how long it will take to remove a disused Boeing 737 that has been abandoned in a busy road. The decommissioned aircraft was being driven through the city at the weekend when the driver got lost and then abandoned the plane….

In Indian parlance it’s said the driver has “absconded.”
