Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary will host their second annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday, Sept 30th, 2007, starting at 1pm. In the presence of the sanctuary’s rescued animals, the celebration will honor farm animals, beloved companion animals and other animals worldwide at a celebratory ceremony of music and multi-denominational prayers. Guests and their companion animals will join in the celebration, which coincides with Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, World Farm Animals Day and the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Festivities include aa musical performance by Prana, a Tibetan blessing of the animals and other animal-inspired prayers. Desserts will be provided by the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society and farm tours held at 2:30 and 3:30. Suggested donation of $10 a person.

The Blessing of the Animals will be led by Reverend Trudi Hirsch and Sensei Bonnie Myotai Treace. Friendly animal companions must be on leashes or in carriers—or bring photos of your beloved animal friends. The event will take place at 1pm rain or shine at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.

FAS is in Willow, when you pass the white church you’re exactly 6/10 mile from Van Wagner Road. Turn right on Van Wagner and you’ll see a big field and barns on the left. The entrance is 35 Van Wagner, second driveway on the left.

Hindu groups oppose canal project

Filed under: India, Misc. Musings — bb @ 6:11 pm

Hindu activists say the canal project will damage Lord Rama’s bridge.

Protest rallies have been held across India by hard-line Hindus to campaign against a proposed shipping canal project between India and Sri Lanka. Massive traffic jams were reported in many places and trains delayed in many parts of the country. Protesters say the project will destroy a bridge they believe was built by Hindu God Ram and his army of monkeys. Scientists question the belief, saying it is solely based on the Hindu mythological epic Ramayana.

Every time we do Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (bridge pose) we are replicating this bridge.

Labor Day Weekend Classes

Filed under: Classes, Schedule — bb @ 5:47 pm

SUNDAY, GENERAL LEVEL CLASS, 10-11:30 at Mt. View Studio
MONDAY, GENERAL LEVEL CLASS, 12-1:30 at Mt. View Studio

“Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country,”
said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. “All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man’s prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day…is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation.” As a creation of the labor movement Labor Day is dedicated to the achievements of all American workers.

I Hear America Singing
by Walt Whitman
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s on his way in the morning, or at noon intermission or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing,
Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day—at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.
