Pop Quiz Answers: Kirtan v. Bhajan

Filed under: India, Misc. Musings, Uncategorized, Woodstock Events — bb @ 8:30 pm

KIRTAN
Singing the Lord’s name with feeling (bhav).

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna,
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare.
Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama Rama Hare Hare.

The supreme expression of Bhakti Yoga is Kirtan. Kirtan soothes the mind, is a form of pranayama, and can be done by all. Kirtan opens the heart. It is said that in this time of Kali Yuga, that it is the repetition of the Lord’s name that will remove all darkness. Kirtan is done in Call and Response format. Repetition. Krishna Das chants mostly Kirtan.

BHAJAN
Bhajans are songs which rejoice in the Glories of the Lord. Devotional songs in a poetic form. Not Call and Resoponse. A ballad, telling a story, getting lost in Divine bhavana. Shyamdas singing the poems of Surdas is singing Bhajan.

Krishna’s flute call
penetrated the forest and clouds.
Even the great sages who heard it immediately fell
into a state of samadhi.
This sound of Brahman
brings forth the greatest joy.

Esi Bansi Baji (He played the flute just like this)

POP QUIZ:
(The answers will be posted at 8:30 tonight.)

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KIRTAN & BHAJAN?

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE:

BHAJAN: BHA (like “butter”) JAN (like “jungle”)
KIRTAN: KIR (like “khir”, “kheer” Indian rice pudding) TAN (like “ton” of steel)

The short “a” sound in Hindi/Sanskrit is more like a “u” sound as in “put.”

Kevin Gardiner Workshop is nearly FULL

Filed under: Classes, Woodstock Events — bb @ 1:40 pm

With 60 people! Everyone who contacted me by July 1st is on the registration list. I need you to PAY by Friday, July 4th or you get put on the WAITING LIST. I’m getting many calls from experienced students from the Iyengar Institute of NY who want to come and spend the weekend in Woodstock. I’d like to accommodate everyone. So let me know. By the way, I attended a class years ago at Mountain View Studio with 75 students in the room. So with all the benches moved to the mirrors we should be fine: four rows of 15 mats each row. I will contact everyone next week about props and other details.
