City of Joy

Filed under: India, Misc. Musings — bb @ 12:47 pm

Blessings to Patrick Swayze and his family with his passing. There is all this talk about “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost” as his best films… but every news report and obituary is missing this important work that he brought to life in 1992:  City of Joy.

City of Joy, a book written by Dominique La Pierre, is based the experiences of a ’spoiled kid drop out doctor’ in Calcutta, India that Mother Theresa introduced Dominique to. The story accurately portrays the slums, the politics, the beauty and the strength of the people there. Swayze did an amazing job in this film.

Or read the book. I read it (finally) 3 years ago just after visiting Calcutta. It is one of the most touching pieces on India I have ever read.

For the media to miss this important work of his is stunning and unconscionable.

QUOTE from the trailer:

Om Puri: The Gods hasn’t made it easy to be a human being.
Patrick Swayze:  I guess that’s why I feel so wonderful to have beaten all the odds.

Footnote to Bollywood Fans: This isn’t a Bollywood film, yet it has two of Bollywood’s greatest in it: Om Puri and Shabana Azmi, both acting in English-speaking roles.

Francois Raoult Workshop, Sept. 19-20

Filed under: Woodstock Events, Yoga — bb @ 9:58 pm

Francois

Last fall I attended an Iyengar Intensive with FRANCOIS RAOULT in Rochester New York. I was so inspired and excited by his teaching that I immediately invited him to come to Woodstock to present to you his knowledge of Iyengar Yoga.

I realized then that many Woodstock students have a limited view of yoga. We are a small town. But the power of following a strong system like Iyengar Yoga is that the lineage is CLEAR. The beauty of the teaching comes though as you study with different teachers. Francois is a master teacher:  in yoga and the related Indian arts and sciences.

For those of you who were “scared off” by previous weekend intensives, this seminar is for you! The majority of the work will be preparing for Pranayama (breath control). Even if you have done NO pranayama, you can come. The yoga and the asana will be presented clearly. It will not be a difficult class asana-wise. But I assure you that you will come away from the weekend inspired for your fall practice season of yoga. NON-IYENGAR STUDENTS are WELCOME TO COME. This will be a very inclusive workshop.

Registration is limited to 40 participants. Sign up soon.

ASANA AND PRANAYAMA:
THE CORE CONNECTION

A WEEKEND OF YOGA with SENIOR TEACHER FRANCOIS RAOULT

Iyengar Yoga emphasizes asana and alignment but also offers great subtlety in the art of breathing and meditation. This seminar explores the classical pranayamas, sitting and lying down:  ujjayi, vilomas, bhramari, the three bandhas and the purification practices of kapalabhati and bhastrika. We will practice asanas and explore their connection to pranayama. Ujjayi breath, for example, enhances asana practice by massaging the inner spine like a wave. In restorative poses and savasana, we will map the breath to discover its inner landscape, the five vayus. We will chant OM as a manifestation of breath and a way to find and express your own voice. Finally, we’ll explore the Ayurvedic approach to pranayama according to the doshas and the gunas.

Held at

Saturday and Sunday, September 19-20, 2009
9:30-4:30 with light lunch break

FRANCOIS RAOULT, M.A., R.I.Y.T, Junior Intermediate Certified Iyengar Yoga Instructor, first felt the call to yoga at age 19 on a pilgrimage to sacred sites of India. Then he completed a masters degree in ethnomusicology. In addition to directing Open Sky Yoga Center in Rochester, New York, Francois teaches yoga seminars worldwide. A graduate of Ecole Nationale de Yoga in Paris he has taught yoga since 1975 and studied meditation with Zen Master Thich Nhat Hahn, Ayurveda with Dr. Robert Svoboda, and anatomy with Thomas Myers.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Woodstock is beautiful in the fall. The leaves won’t be turning yet, but the weather should be perfect. Those of you coming from the city or elsewhere, make a weekend or a holiday of it. There is plenty to do in Woodstock: Tibetan & Zen Monasteries, Overlook Mountain, fresh air, good food. Please email me if you need directions and hotel or B&B accommodations. Woodstock is an easy two hour drive from NYC depending on the traffic leaving the City. If you don’t drive, want to save on gas money, or be green about it you can easily take the Trailways bus (only 2 hours) from Port Authority. The bus drops you in the center of Woodstock for your lodging and it’s an easy stroll to get to Mountain View Studio and the local cafes. Let me know if you need more information.

SPECIAL FOR MOMS & DADS: CHILD CARE
I have a very reliable young lady available to take your kids on a Woodstock Day Trip while you are attending the workshop. The price will be reasonable and determined by the number of kids involved. Let me know when you sign up if you need her services. She’s OK with all ages of children.

CANCELLATION
If you must cancel, you will get a full refund only if your spot can be filled. Otherwise I will hold a $25 cancellation fee.
