Yoga for Osteoporosis: The Complete Guide

Yoga for Osteoporosis and Arthritis
Tele-Class for $34 on two Monday nights:
November 29 and December 6, 8:30 pm

I am attending!

Loren Fishman is the medical doctor and yoga teacher in NYC who is currently running the Yoga for Osteoporosis study. Two current Woodstock Yoga students are in the study. I have worked with them privately and they are seeing good results of increased bone density. I think this is very good work and an easy study to participate in. Tele-Classes are very fun and empowering. You listen in on your phone/ speaker phone and are able to ask questions (or not) at the end. It’s a large group conference call! You can be as anonymous or active as you want.

Dr. Loren Fishman and yoga therapist Ellen Saltonstall are currently conducting a research study on the effects of yoga on osteoporosis. They will be sharing their early findings in the teleclass and offer information about how to enroll in the study.

Many people with osteoporosis also have osteoarthritis, which poses conflicting treatment demands and therefore a dilemma – how to do one exercise regime which helps both conditions. Again, yoga is the solution – generating no-impact forces in excess of gravity by opposing one muscle group to another, (to reverse osteoporosis) stretching all the muscles and joints involved and increasing range of motion and joint fluid movement as well.

This course includes a detailed examination of the use of yoga asanas for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, and offers insight into other sources of treatment and prevention, including nutritional strategies.

If we have enough interest I will offer a special class on the yoga asanas that Dr. Fishman is using in the study and how make it work for you. Please email me (bxboris@yahoo.com) to let me know if you want to do a special class in December/ January on this work.

Here’s another link with a full photo gallery.

“Dr. Iyengar known for deciphering the code of Patanjali Yoga Sutra in a scientific way and who has practiced Yoga for the last 60 years explained the seven stages in achieving happiness through yoga. He said the moment the intellect of the heart and mind meets through complete understanding of body and mind cleansing, that is when the consciousness of the egoistic self or the “I” is nullified and a practitioner experiences boundless uncolored joy. The aim of yoga, said the sprightly 93-yr-old is to achieve non-colorisation of happiness where remnants of the self is eliminated. He said a yoga practitioner treats negative emotions such as anger as separate entities and thereby brings the mind under control.”

Happy Thanksgiving all! What a great world we live in!

Post Thanksgiving Digestion Class

Filed under: Classes, Schedule, Woodstock Events, Yoga — bb @ 12:11 pm

Thanksgiving is here! We all have much to be thankful for living in the Woodstock area. I hope you add to your list how profound it is that we are able to freely practice yoga and to spend time on the spiritual path. This is one of the greatest blessings in life.

Have a great holiday, and I look forward to seeing you in this year’s:

Post Thanksgiving Digestion Class
Friday, November 26
11:00 to 1:00 p.m.
Mountain View Studio, Woodstock
$20

(Mountain View Studio is just off of Rock City Road, opposite the Colony Cafe, behind the Main Free Public Parking Lot)

NOTE: Please bring your own mat if you have one, I usually run out in these big classes. Thanks.

This class is open to all levels and students of all styles of yoga. But please, no absolute beginners or major injuries for this class. It will be moving too fast for your safety.

The Apana Vayu Prana is the main downward digestion energy of the body. Although most yoga classes and postures are done to stimulate the upward flow of Prana to lead towards Enlightenment, unless the downward Apana Vayu is moving correctly, congestion, blockages, sluggishness, constipation, and dullness will result.

It’s not: “You are what you eat.”  It’s: “You are what you don’t poop out!”

After a feasting holiday, it is good to work on asanas to stimulate this downward flow. This will be a STRONG yoga class. Besides stimulating the Apana Vayu Prana, we will work to stimulate the Agni Gastric Fire. Please let me know before class if you are having your period. Some abdominal asanas are not appropriate during menstruation. Alternate postures will be offered for you, so don’t let that be an excuse not to come.

We will work on the following:

* kriyas to stimulate digestion and elimination
* asanas to stimulate digestion and elimination
* jumpings in the various asanas and vinyasana
* inversions
* twists, compressions, and stretches to the abdomen
* a long expansive restorative pose to relax the abdomen and belly at the end

Regular 2 hour students can use their class card to pay the discounted $18 price. If you have an 1 1/2 hour card add $4. All other students pay $20. No need to register in advance. Please be at the studio by 10:45 to sign in and get a space.

Big Yoga Blanket Sale – Right Now!

Filed under: Asana, Classes, Misc. Musings, Yoga — bb @ 9:29 am

Yogis, this is as best as it gets re: blankets. I have some of these blankets at Mountain View Studio. You can check out the “feel” there. The Indian white ones just aren’t available right now.

http://www.yogaaccessories.com/Thunderbird-Supreme-Mexican-Yoga-Blanket-_p_123861.html

Buy at least 7. That way you get the free shipping. 7 x $14.99 = $104.93 A great investment for your yoga practice.

I suggest you order a good stack so you have a matching set; a tidy pile for restorative asanas. Supta Baddha Konasana: 2-3 for the “bolster/ narrow pile” (better than buying a bolster, easier on your back), one for each knee, 2 for head. That’s 7 total. It’s so great to have enough blankets at home to leave certain props set up so you just go into the pose whenever you want: like Salamba Sarvangasana (3-4) and Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (3-6).

The I saw pink ones at Kevin’s workshop. They were really nice and thick!

If enough people do this pre holiday shopping gig we can have a “How to Use Your New Blankets” class. That way you can become confident in propping the asanas with your own props. Let me know if you go shopping!
